Varrin’s Aviation Index

Below is a set of articles that make up a history of my aviation career. This set of articles was written in early 2003 as a result of numerous inquiries I received for information about Comair Aviation Academy. I decided I should just write everything down because it’s all relevant and other elements (like my time at Comair Airlines and World Airways) might be of interest to some people too. Some of the pages do have pictures included. Enjoy!

Note (May, 2014): These are out of date and will be updated eventually.

Intro – Document history, purpose, and introduction
History – How I got started – the story before the story
Comair Aviation Academy – Details about my time as a student and instructor at Comair Aviation Academy, now Delta Connection Academy
Comair Airlines – Information about flying for Comair Airlines
World Airways – Information about flying for World Airways
Conclusion – A wrap up of the whole story

The government did something right

I just received an operational bulletin from work that was a pleasure to read. Even more, it was about something the government did. How rare is that??? The 1st Class medical is required for those who are exercising the privileges of a Airline Transport Pilot certificate. That basically means anyone … Continue reading →

Fleet rumors

Seems there are a lot of fleet rumors going around. So far, these all fall in the rumor department. We just had a bid increasing the MD-11 staffing which is probably related to rumors of getting more MD-11’s. One possible source I’ve heard is Varig Log, which makes good sense … Continue reading →

Yet another eventful day

I was supposed to go home yesterday (the 3rd), but there was apparently a sick call at work and they made me an offer I couldn’t refuse to take the trip. It was from Dover, DE to Leipzig. I wanted to make it home for fireworks (which it appears I … Continue reading →

Stuff happens

I thought it might be interesting to review the month’s flying from the standpoint of all the things that I’d call eventful. Eventful is the kind of day I prefer not to have when going flying. Boring and unmemorable is best. This month has been more eventful than boring. I’ve … Continue reading →

When I upgraded to Captain at Comair, I had a hunch that my great life as a senior F/O would be ruined. Indeed, I was right. But all’s well that ends well, I wound up with this job and that’s good. What I didn’t expect was for the job itself … Continue reading →

World videos

A flight attendant I recently flew with who works in the training department told me he had made some videos for inflight (flight attendant) training covering a lot of what goes into making a World Airways flight happen. There are three videos on youtube totalling about 30 minutes. They cover … Continue reading →

Back to work + biggie review

I’m back to work again. I don’t have time now for the details, but here’s the overview, details to come later. Vacation went well. I’ll probably write more about it later. We saw lots of people and did lots of stuff. I had several days off after vacation and, much … Continue reading →

Checklist complete

Well, it’s finally finished. I’ve completed the colossal checklist of training items required to be released to the line as a regular line pilot. The trip from Hawaii to California to Atlanta completed my OE and line check which were the last items remaining. The next time I go fly, … Continue reading →

Next week, the fam and I are going on a vacation of sorts. I’m not sure how many people make a family vacation out of a visit with a terminally ill friend, but that’s exactly what we’re doing. When I finished up my type rating, the forecast for going out … Continue reading →
