Just a quickie update that I should have posted a few days ago. Scott had his (second) surgery and it went well. They wound up not having to take out as much ‘stuff’ as they expected and he was recovered enough to actually be in church on Sunday. V-

Jam session

This week was a week of jam sessions at home, of all places. There’s usually not all that much going on in Keene, musically speaking. But I managed to get in on quite a bit the last few days. I read in the Monadnock Shopper News about two different jam … Continue reading →

Simple pleasures: a hike

The weather is finally suitable for non-winter outdoor activity, so I thought it’d be nice to go for a hike. It’s been a while since I’ve done anything outdoorsy and I’ve been missing it. Last night, I bounced the idea of hiking Mt. Monadnock off Edi and that was met … Continue reading →

Home from trip 1

By Varrin Swearingen | April 22, 2008 - 6:17 PM |May 21, 2014 Travel, Work

I made it home from my first trip in the left seat of the DC-10. It had its challenges but we all made it to the end. The trip started out with a delay. That landing I previously blogged about actually happened about 16 hours or so later than it … Continue reading →

Discussing the disgusting – the FLDS story

By Varrin Swearingen | April 17, 2008 - 2:59 PM |May 21, 2014 Faith, Freedom

I have made precious few comments about the scandal surrounding the Yearning For Zion ranch of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. What I can say so far is that just about the whole thing disgusts me. For starters, if the allegations against the FLDS are … Continue reading →

Firsts, dates, and applause

I’m not always good at remembering dates. In fact, I’m pretty bad at it, so I’m happy that God has been smiling on me all these years and keeping the number of dates down to a minimum. And I even get some nice reminders, from time to time. Our kids … Continue reading →

Back to work tomorrow

Tomorrow, I’ll head back to work again. This time, it’ll be to actually fly an airplane (woo hoo)! Specifically, it’ll be to fly my first trip as a Captain in the DC-10. It has some domestic flying in it, as well as an Atlantic crossing (Baltimore to Leipzig, Germany, to … Continue reading →

2008 Monterey Jazz Festival

Just thought I’d give a few thoughts on this coming year’s Monterey Jazz Festival lineup. This is by no means a complete commentary on the whole entire huge big program with about a billion different artists crammed into 2 1/2 days. Just a few thoughts. First off, it looks like … Continue reading →

Living the dream… errr reality…

The article below ran in today’s New York Times. It’s worth a read. One important insight isn’t mentioned, though. While the article states top salaries have been whacked by 1/3, the dollar has simultaneously inflated significantly. I recently did some pay analysis to get a feel for what has really … Continue reading →

Important milestones

By Varrin Swearingen | April 9, 2008 - 11:25 PM |April 9, 2008 Uncategorized

Today was a day of important milestones. Mandriva Linux 2008.1 (Spring) came out today. It’s the latest release from Mandriva and marks 10 years of Linux distributions from them. 2008 was (finally) a good distribution. I’m looking forward to this Spring release. And another important milestone was reached today. As … Continue reading →
