Varrin’s Aviation Index

Below is a set of articles that make up a history of my aviation career. This set of articles was written in early 2003 as a result of numerous inquiries I received for information about Comair Aviation Academy. I decided I should just write everything down because it’s all relevant and other elements (like my time at Comair Airlines and World Airways) might be of interest to some people too. Some of the pages do have pictures included. Enjoy!

Note (May, 2014): These are out of date and will be updated eventually.

Intro – Document history, purpose, and introduction
History – How I got started – the story before the story
Comair Aviation Academy – Details about my time as a student and instructor at Comair Aviation Academy, now Delta Connection Academy
Comair Airlines – Information about flying for Comair Airlines
World Airways – Information about flying for World Airways
Conclusion – A wrap up of the whole story

Home from trip 1

I made it home from my first trip in the left seat of the DC-10. It had its challenges but we all made it to the end. The trip started out with a delay. That landing I previously blogged about actually happened about 16 hours or so later than it … Continue reading →

Firsts, dates, and applause

I’m not always good at remembering dates. In fact, I’m pretty bad at it, so I’m happy that God has been smiling on me all these years and keeping the number of dates down to a minimum. And I even get some nice reminders, from time to time. Our kids … Continue reading →

Living the dream… errr reality…

The article below ran in today’s New York Times. It’s worth a read. One important insight isn’t mentioned, though. While the article states top salaries have been whacked by 1/3, the dollar has simultaneously inflated significantly. I recently did some pay analysis to get a feel for what has really … Continue reading →

Yet another airline decided to shut down. Skybus, headquartered in Columbus, OH, is ceasing all operations today. Let’s review: March 31: Aloha Airlines ceases passenger operations after 61 years of operation April 2: American Trans Air (ATA) ceases operations after 35 years of operation April 5: Skybus Airlines ceased operations … Continue reading →

Apologies in advance for the length (and occasional language / adult themes). This was just too funny not to pass up. This explains a bit about me… 🙂 This came from Retired UAL Pilots website. Cheap Bastards When my company hired me two decades ago, one of the first things … Continue reading →

ATA ceases operations, files bankruptcy

Note: This is business wire’s version of one of the many articles on this topic. It doesn’t mention that World Airways is a subsidiary of Global Aero Logistics, but we are (as is North American Airlines). From here. ATA Airlines Files for Chapter 11 and Discontinues Operations Following Cancellation of … Continue reading →

Old airlines

I completed my LOFT tonight. That finishes the training I have to do prior to going out to fly the line. I do have another simulator session tomorrow night seat filling for another (identical) LOFT, but my paperwork is already done. So that’s all good news. Aloha Airlines filed for … Continue reading →

Tower tour round 2

My dad and I had quite a bit of discussion leading up to the tower tour about the first tower tour I went on, now more than half my life ago (yikes!). A lot has happened since then and it was kind of fun to review. The tower tour was … Continue reading →

A tour of the tower

This, I suppose, will go down in the ‘history of me’ category. The time has come to tell a story that will probably wander a bit. It’s partly a trip down memory lane, but partly in anticipation of next week’s trip to California. It’s a story I’ve told many times, … Continue reading →

“I’d rather be in Chinese airspace”

I never thought I’d utter such a phrase. Neither the stereotypes nor even the facts of flying in Chinese airspace would tend to lend itself to such a comment, but I was rather relieved tonight to be done with Myanmar. From the moment I checked on, I was thinking “I’d … Continue reading →
