More jazz in Leipzig

Last night I made it to the second place that I learned about with jazz in Leipzig. It’s called Cafe Protzendorf (translate with Google). They have live music on Monday nights. Usually, it’s a jazz jam session, but last night it was a special concert.

It was hard to come up with just the right name for the music, but maybe free jazz is best. The band consisted of cello, piano, and drums (photo here). It was quite an international affair, too. I don’t know where the drummer was from, but the cellist was from Kaoshung, Taiwan, and the pianist was from Lithuania. The piano player was leaving (today, actually), so they arranged for this special concert of their music.

It’s a small venue, seating a little over 30 at the most. There were probably 20-25 actually there. The cafe also had another area with a door separating it from the music area as well as seating outside.

I wound up chatting a bit with the people at the table behind me, which at one point included the musicians who were performing. I noticed they were speaking English so I thought I’d see where they were from. In addition to the musicians, I talked briefly with a guy from Australia. Seems the Leipzig University has quite an international draw.

I asked about other jazz venues and, aside from the university itself, all they could come up with were all the places I’ve now been to (Spizz, Tonelli’s, and Cafe Protzendorf). Hopefully I’ll be able to hit the jazz nights at some of them on future layovers.

In other cafe-related news, I had lunch earlier in the day at a sidewalk cafe that had fantastic food. I ordered the penne with dijon mustard sauce and pork and it was amazing. Maybe I’ll go back today….. 🙂

Tomorrow, I fly back to Baltimore and then go home (finally). July will be mostly domestic (just one Leipzig trip at the end of the month).

Sounds like you found some good music abroad!
Did you happen to get that penne recipe?

No, but I think I’ll see if I can find something similar and maybe work it up to see how it goes. It was really, really good. The mustard wasn’t overpowering but definitely tasty. And all the veggies were just right…
