Brother Thelonious

Got down here to Memphis yesterday afternoon and went out to stock my studio hotel room (with almost complete kitchen; no oven). Found a 750 ml bottle of Brother Thelonious beer. I ran into them at the Monterey Jazz Festival last year. The North Coast Brewing Company has made a Belgian style abbey ale and called it Brother Thelonious, after Thelonious Monk (cute pun, eh?). They make a contribution to jazz education with every case sold and have a drawing of Monk, complete with piano keyboard halo, drinking a glass.

I tried it when I was at the jazz fest and remembered it being good. I split the bottle with my sim partner. He was pretty impressed as was I. It’s still obviously American made, but it’s a lot closer to a real Belgian beer than just about anything else American I’ve tried. Having said that, my skepticism generally prevents me from trying American made Belgian style beers. After having the real stuff, nothing compares. But this came close…

Off to sim training.

I think it’s readily available in California. It’s brewed there. Check BevMo, I bet they have it. If not, let me know and I’ll see what I can come up with. Worst case, I’m sure I can get some at the MJF and bring it back in Sept. The brewery is likely to be there again.
