“I’d rather be in Chinese airspace”

I never thought I’d utter such a phrase. Neither the stereotypes nor even the facts of flying in Chinese airspace would tend to lend itself to such a comment, but I was rather relieved tonight to be done with Myanmar. From the moment I checked on, I was thinking “I’d rather be in Chinese airspace.”

I’m not sure what vintage their newest radio is, but I’m thinking it’s more than a handful of decades old. I think they’ve only got one person working the entire country, all on one frequency, and maybe two or three repeaters which are horribly out of synch with each other. There were several conversations that I simply couldn’t understand, not because the girl on the other end was as difficult to make out as some of the Korean controllers, but solely because of the quality of the radios. You know it’s bad when you’re happy to get a relay from a Chinese airline…

And while I’m on the topic of Myanmar, where in the world did they come up with the name for the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas? I’m sure there’s no hotel in Mandalay called the Las Vegas Bay. If there was, though, it would be interesting to find out where you’d find the higher percentage of people who found those names funny.

ROFL! I have often found branding names to be funny. Wish I could think of a particularly funny one off the top of my head. But alas… And now that you mention it, is there really a Mandalay “bay”? Or is it just Mandalay. Kinda makes you go hmmmm…

    Mandalay Bay
Maybe the name is just good marketing? It ‘sticks’. Funny you would mention a resort that is home to a House of Blues – lol 😉 You want a postcard from there? I’ll be in Vegas next month! 😀 Hope all is well – flying home in a few hours . . . methinks I’ll have an update tonight . . .
